A few weeks later, Walter awoke to ambulance lights on the street. Richard, drenched in sweat, was sitting upright in a stretcher clutching his chest while the paramedics wheeled him down the sidewalk. They were frantically strapping an oxygen mask to his face, while reading the flashing indicators on their monitor. Walter was just able to run outside and ask about the hospital destination before the paramedic team left. Tempted to follow the ambulance, Walter, instead made sure Richard’s house was locked up and then unsuccessfully tried to sleep. The next morning, the Carlisles visited Richard at the Scripps ICU.
