One morning after ignoring the weather advisories and feeling eager to surf a massive swell, Richard returned from the beach with a torn wetsuit and broken board. Leaving the board on the front lawn in pieces, he showered and scrubbed his bloodied knee. After reemerging with a fresh set of shorts he sat on his front step and bandaged his cuts and scrapes. Looking up at the stormy sky, he was thankful he hadn’t died in the incredibly violent ocean. He had been careless and overconfident and the forces of nature humbled him.
